Attire Guide

What to Wear to a Celebration of Life

A complete dress code guide for men and women — what colors are appropriate, what styles work, and what to avoid.

The General Rule: Respect + Personality

A celebration of life is less formal than a traditional funeral, but it still calls for thoughtful, respectful attire. The core principle: dress in a way that honors the person being remembered and shows respect for their family.

Always check the invitation first. Families sometimes specify a dress code — "wear their favorite color," "casual beach attire," or "smart casual." If nothing is specified, the guidance below applies for most events.

What Colors to Wear

Always Safe

Black, charcoal, navy, dark grey, burgundy, forest green. These are universally appropriate and respectful.

🤍

Usually Fine

Soft pastels, muted florals, dusty rose, sage green, beige, ivory. Elegant and understated.

⚠️

Check First

Bright colors (red, hot pink, orange) can be appropriate if the family specifically invites celebratory color — but not without confirmation.

White is traditionally avoided at Western memorial events as it can feel wedding-adjacent, but in some cultural traditions it is the color of mourning. When in doubt, go darker.

What Women Should Wear

Any of the following work well and strike the right balance between respectful and comfortable:

  • Wrap dress or midi dress

A classic, versatile choice. Navy, charcoal, or muted floral patterns are ideal. Knee-length or longer is best.

  • Tailored trousers + blouse

Dark trousers with a silk or cotton blouse in a neutral tone. Polished without being overdressed.

  • Pencil skirt + blazer

A classic combination that works for both indoor and outdoor events. Avoid very short hemlines.

  • Maxi dress (for outdoor events)

If it's a garden party or beach celebration of life, a flowing maxi dress in a muted tone is comfortable and appropriate.

  • Jumpsuit

A well-tailored jumpsuit in black, navy, or dark green is a modern, polished option.

What Men Should Wear

  • Dark suit + dress shirt

A charcoal, navy, or black suit with a white or light blue dress shirt. A tie is optional but adds formality.

  • Sport coat + dress trousers

A blazer with dark slacks is appropriate for a semi-formal or casual celebration. Avoid jeans.

  • Button-down + dress pants (no jacket)

For casual, outdoor, or summertime events, a pressed button-down and dark chinos or slacks works well.

  • Avoid loud patterns

Avoid neon colors, novelty prints, or overly casual clothing like polo shirts with logos.

What NOT to Wear

  • ✗ Ripped jeans, shorts, or athletic wear
  • ✗ Very revealing clothing (low-cut tops, micro-minis)
  • ✗ Anything that draws attention away from the event
  • ✗ Very bright, neon, or party-style outfits (unless specifically requested)
  • ✗ Heavy perfume or cologne that may be overwhelming in close gatherings
